The formal pastoral
system is newly established in our school, with a new deputy head teacher Ms
Rose Mary Violette who
deals mainly
with students care and support. The progress and development of the
children
is monitored by
experienced class teachers who work closely with the deputy head for pastoral care.
Pastoral Care
Schools are not just simply institutions for learning the academic side of things (very important though they are). Schools are also about preparing students for life. Pastoral Care embodies both the Personal and Social Development of students and Personal and Social Education. Bringing up teenagers has enormous rewards but equally it can be an enormous challenge. All schools are required to promote the Personal and Social Development of their students. Hence its place in our secondary schools is of enormous magnitude. This should not be by a reactive approach but by a proactive approach. We should not wait for problems to happen and then teach the students to cope with them, but build in each a proper attitude and equip them with skills, which will not only enable them to cope with the problem but also foresee and avoid them. As the old saying goes, Prevention is better than cure.
At school this is done by ensuring that the curriculum is:
· balanced and broadly based;
· structured so that it promotes spiritual understanding, moral, cultural, mental and physical development;
· Structured so that it helps prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
Personal and Social Education: P.S.E the means by which Personal and Social Development is achieved at school and implemented by the Ministry of Education. At our school this falls under the responsibility of the pastoral deputy head. Personal and Social Education is promoted through the curriculum as a whole and also specifically through Personal and Social Education
Programs, extra-curricular activities, guidance, career guidance and a multitude of projects and events which are designed to enrich a student's lives at school.
If the energy of all the contributing parts is tapped and pooled then the benefits will be multiplied. In the school, Pastoral Care responsibility lies not only with the P.S.E. teachers but also with each and every teacher who has daily contact with the children in their classes. Within the school each person
has both a pastoral role and other roles to play.
