| The Islands were possibly first settled by Arab voyagers. Situated
on both European and East Indian trade-routes, to and from the
Cape of Good Hope and the Red Sea, the Islands were often visited
and settled by outlawed free-booters and pirates. They made perfect
secret bases for these wild sea-captains as they were uninhabited
and offered secure anchorages, wonderful food and fresh water
as well as hardwood & sisal for repairing ship's timbers and ropes.
These wily navigators kept the knowledge secret, each having his
own name for the islands: The Five Brothers, The Seven Sisters,
The Islands of Cocos, The Islands of Palms. |
