The office is comprised of two sections: Civil Status section where all records of vital events of births, deaths and marriages are registered and ID section where ID cards are produced and issued.

The Central Civil Status Office is situated at Independence House with three branch Offices at Anse Royale, Praslin and La Digue.

The ID Office is situated at the Oceangate House.

OPENING HOURS

The office is normally open from 8a.m. to 11a.m. and from 1p.m. to 3p.m. for death declaration which can be registered up to 4p.m.

 

BIRTHS REGISTRATION

All births occur in the Republic should be registered within 30 days from the date of birth.

Birth should be registered at the regional office where it took place.  The birth may be declared by both parents and the maternity certificate has to be produced.  Two witnesses are to be present at the time of declaration.

 

DEATHS REGISTRATION

No interment can take place until the death of the person to be interred has been registered and a permit has been issued by Civil Status Office.  Death should be declared within twenty-four hours.  The declaration should be done by two informants after having received the medical death's certificate.   Death should be declared at the regional office where it took place.

If the medical death certificate cannot be obtained, the informants should contact the police department.

 

WEEKEND DECLARATION

The office is open during weekend to receive declaration of death.   The contact telephone No is 388183/383184 or the person on duty.

 

MARRIAGES

The majority age for a male & female persons to contract marriage is eighteen years old.

A female person under eighteen years old may contract civil marriage with the consent of her parents.

The duration of publication of banns is eleven days before a marriage can take place.  Dispensation may be obtained by application on reasonable ground.

For publication of banns the following documents have to be produced: Birth certificate, ID cards, death and divorce certificates where applicable.

Tourists wishing to contract marriage in the Seychelles may call at the Civil Status Office to make the necessary arrangement.

The parties concerned may also contact their local agents to pre-book and make the arrangement for them before their arrival.

All French Citizen are requested to contact their Embassy in Seychelles prior to the celebration of marriage.

Apart from the documents mentioned above the parties have to produce their passports.

All documents have to be translated in English or French.

 

DIVORCE, ANNULMENT OF MARRIAGE AND ADOPTION

Persons seeking advise on these matters are asked to contact their legal adviser, but copies of certificates are forwarded by the court and are the kept at the Civil Status office.

 

CERTIFICATES

Certificates of births, deaths and marriages could be obtained at a fee of SR25 for a large extract and SR15 for an abbreviated (small ) copy

 

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF NATURAL CHILDREN

Any authorised notaries are capable of drawing up such documents.   An original copy should be forwarded to the Civil Status Office within eight days.

 

CHANGE OF NAME

Every person whether born in Seychelles or not who is a citizen of Seychelles by birth or naturalization and has resided in Seychelles for three years may apply by petition to the Chief Officer of the Civil Status for leave to make change or addition of his name, surname or family name.

The application will be published three times in the Official Gazette for four months.

The application will be approved if no objection has been lodged or on good and sufficient ground in support of the application.

The fee for the application is SR500/- and the publications in the gazette is around

SR300/-.

 

APPLICATION FOR NIN

An application (obtainable at ID Office) must be supported by relative documents such as birth certificate, passport, air ticket, residence permit citizenship naturalization certificates and gainful occupations permit.

N I N and are issued to person of the following categories:

    (1) Resident of Seychelles.

    (2) Expatriates and GOP holders and their dependents (as stated on their permit).

    (3) The N I N shall be valid for the period of their contract or GOP.

 

REPLACEMENT OF ID CARDS

(a)

 

In the case of a change of name the person must notify the Chief Officer of the Civil Status within 60 days of the change.  The application for a new card must be accompanied by the old card and a copy of the authorisation of change of name issued by the Civil Status.

(b)

In the case of a lost card, the application must be supported by a police certificate.

(c)

In the case of a defaced card, the application must be accompanied by the old card.
