sunday 28th...
Just to let you know we had a fantastic dive at whale rock, we saw 5 peacock mantis shrimps and loads of morays.
There were 5 anemones with a lot of clown fish on, big octopus, wart slugs etc. Luke was so impressed that he said it matches up to
L'ilot except no soft coral. He said it’s his best dive since he has been back to the Seychelles. Jeff enjoyed the dive as
well, he took lots of pictures. I showed Luke where the swim- through was and everyone went through
it.
Thanks for letting us go there.

More
whale sharks... The monitoring trips run in conjunction with MCSS
started in earnest this month and luckily most of the sharks have
been seen off the west coast and so we have been able to depart
directly from Dive Seychelles with the briefings taking place in
the comfort of our own dive deck. So
far we have had 47 in-water encounters, with 32 sharks identified,
16 of which were recorded here in a previous year. You can
get more information on the status of sightings from the MCSS
whaleshark blog.

 Its
whale shark season!! Although we had some very early sightings the
numbers this season are similar to last year... So far we have had
29 in-water encounters, mainly on the MCSS monitoring programme,
although we have had 8 directly on our dives. 18 of the sharks
have been identified photographically by the MCSS, 9 of which are
sharks that were recorded here in a previous year.

The
Underwater Centre / Dive Seychelles is the leading PADI centre in
Seychelles as recorded by PADI in their monthly analysis of
certifications and specialty courses. We have been the leader for
certifications for several months now and are doing well with
specialty courses, particularly Nitrox and Digital Underwater
Photography...... and as its whale shark season now we can also
offer this!

 The
first whale shark of the season arrived at Shark Bank on the 22nd
of May, very early for this season. The shark was also small at
just over 3 metres and visiting divers Tom Kapser & Marion
Wagner managed to capture a series of great photos which they
passed on to the whale shark team at the Marine Conservation
Society Seychelles. Using computer assisted photo ID the shark was
added to the Seychelles database as a new shark as the spot
patterns did not match any of the sharks currently recorded. A
great and early start to the season!

And of course
there were whale sharks... not so many as in 2006 which set new
records in Seychelles, but there were still lots of them! This is
an aerial view taken from our microlight of a group of sharks
feeding off the south of mahe. |

September
saw the start of the whale shark season in earnest and as things
got busier they got sillier... as they do! After one particularly
flat-out day with loads of rain, David tried to pack our exhausted
chief volunteer Katie into a dive-bag, with some success! |
