2010: Whale Shark Monitoring Programme

WHALE SHARK SUCCESS

It seems an awful long time ago that microlight pilot Rob Allen first touched down his amazing little aircraft on Beau Vallon beach but that was indeed the start of the   the Seychelles Whale Shark Monitoring Programme ... we have come a long way from that first pilot study in November 1996!

From that first project, where we flew for only ten days, we have increased to some 90 days of monitoring with over 100 flights and currently up to 700 in-water encounters per year !

With the evolution of the Marine Conservation Society Seychelles, we were able to attract grant funding and the programme has not looked back since!

Since 2005, the MCSS whale shark monitoring activities have been supported by the Save Our Seas Foundation, through the provision of financial support for external costs, and  by the Underwater Centre with continued logistical support. The operating costs since 2005 have been met by public donations from participants in the whale shark encounter programme.

During much of 2009 the sharks stayed in the South West of Mahe; guided by our micro-light aircraft, the monitoring team  managed to  achieve over 291 in-water encounters, during which some 89 individual sharks were identified and  had digital photo-identities recorded.

More details are available on the MCSS web site.

The 2010 season is well underway with micro-light supported activities starting in August. Visit the MCSS whale shark Blog for the latest information. To participate in the coming season visit our whale shark programme page for details of the programme components and how you can assist.

BACKGROUND:

Whale Sharks have long been the ultimate marine animal for many divers but yet very littleWhale Shark with photographer is know about these magnificent creatures. Recent attempts to get international protected status for these sharks succeeded to achieve Appendix ll status at CITES last year. Over the last five years whale sharks in the Indian Ocean have been subjected to unlimited slaughter for the far eastern 'Fad Food' restaurant industry and sightings seem to have declined in many areas.

In Seychelles although whale sharks have never been hunted, since November 2002 they have fully protected in Seychelles waters and sightings have in fact been on the increase over the last few years. The Underwater Centre is honoured to be closely involved with the Whale Shark Monitoring programme of the Marine Conservation Society, Seychelles, (incorporating the Shark Research Institute Seychelles) Now you too can assist us in getting the much needed data to get this species legally protected, and have an immense amount of fun and excitement into the bargain!

The tagging programme from 2001 to 2003 incorporated not only visual tag placement but also deployment of acoustic tags and satellite tags. These new technologies have been made possible through support from the World Bank Global Environmental Facility. For programme participants this has opened up substantial new areas of involvement in this globally important research programme.

The tagging programme is supported from our land base utilising our fast power catamarans. The monitoring programme relies on aerial surveys from our microlight aircraft to pin-point the positions of the sharks. This allows our monitoring team boat to quickly and efficiently locate the sharks and check them for the project. This gives you an unrivalled chance seeing these amazing creatures and at the same time assist in a worthwhile conservation effort.
