The youth of Seychelles have expressed their desire
to see in the country a public transport system that is reliable and
efficient.
The call comes in the Aspiration 2013 document
presented to President Albert Rene on National Day. The presentation at
Stad Linite following the traditional June 18 parade was the culmination
of eight weeks of consultations Vice-President James Michel had with the
youth of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue from March to May this year.
More than 3,000 youth took part in the 60 sessions
at secondary, post-secondary and district level to express their
aspirations for the development of Seychelles over the next decade.
Their hopes and wishes have been compiled in the document presented to
President Rene.
"We yearn for a safe, reliable, regular and
efficient public transport system which allows commuters a comfortable
journey at affordable prices," states the page on public transport.
On this same subject the youth also express their
appreciation for the considerable investments in new vehicles, equipment
and infrastructure.
"We are gratified to note that the central bus
terminal on Mahe and the domestic air terminal on Praslin have been
newly constructed and meet expectations in terms of capacity and
comfort," the page states.
"We observe with satisfaction that in the case of
land transport, secondary roads have been constructed to enable access
to villages and remote communities, extending the route network into
every possible motorable area," the page adds.
Acknowledging that public transport is faced with
increasing demand for quality service, the youth suggest that more money
be invested in fleet renewal and in human resources. |
