Hoteliers are being
urged to proactively manage the large volumes of solid and hazardous
wastes that their establishments generate as this practice could reduce
their operating costs, preserve local nature attractions, reduce odours
and pest infections and ensure the development of sustainable tourism.
In line with this
the Ministry of Tourism & Transport (MTT) in conjunction with the
Ministry of Environment, SWAC (Solid Waste and Cleaning Agency) and STAR
(Société de Traîtement et d'Assainissement Régional) Seychelles is
appealing to owners and managers of all tourism establishments to attend
a presentation on "Solid Waste Management".
Acknowledging that
poor solid waste management does not only contaminate water sources, but
also destroys the very environment that is the prime reason tourists
come to our shores, MTT has found it apt to create public awareness on
this subject.
The main aim of this
presentation is to educate the hoteliers on the importance of improving
on the environmental performances of their respective establishments
through better solid waste management, conducting waste management
self-evaluation and developing solid waste management plan towards
integrated environmental management system.
In view of possible
logistical difficulties that may arise, the organisers have decided to
conduct the talk "closer to the hoteliers", hence on each of
the main islands. The first presentation will be on La Digue on Tuesday
January 28 at 9:45 a.m. at Chateau St. Cloud. Another will be on Praslin
on the same day at 2 p.m. at Hotel Marechiaro, whilst the final one will
be held on Mahé on Thursday January 30 at 10 a.m. in Room 3 of the
International Conference Centre. Presentations are free of charge and
interested participants are asked to confirm their attendance to Mrs
Sinha Levkovic on Tel: 61 11 00, Fax: 22 40 35 or e-mail slevkovic@tourism.sc
or mtt@tourism.sc by January 27, 2003.
