Scores of youths will display their talents along
Church Street in Victoria on Saturday next week as they take part in
the pre-youth festival.
They will emerge at 9.00 a.m. and entertain
shoppers and passers-by with fashion shows and popular games during
the non-paying event.
Announcing this Thursday August 7, principal
youth officer, Mrs Joyce Zialor, said that activities are scheduled to
continue until 3.00 p.m. and will see 12 models fashion four different
kinds of casual wear and other costumes each.
"Others will play domino and basket ball as even
more youths from the central districts of Mahe perform a variety of
dances," she said.
There will also be the sale of hats and other
items on that day in the town activity.
Mrs Zialor also told Nation that on the
same day, from 2.00 p.m., Triers Band will give a live performance at
Les Mamelles community centre where youths from East Mahe will hold
their pre-youth festival activities where there will also be drama
performances, a variety show and "happy hours."
The pre-festival activities for North Mahe will
start at Beau Vallon on Thursday August 14 from 6.00 p.m. when young
people will take part in a variety show. The North will see more of
the activities at Glacis on August 16, when the youths will attend
mass at St Jean Baptiste Church from 5.00 p.m. They will then proceed
to the parish hall where a gospel music show will be staged from 6.00
p.m.
Glacis will also see kick-boxing and a "discover
your talents show" staged by first time performers.
Activities for West Mahe will take place at Baie
Lazare where mass will start at 4.00 p.m., giving way to a volley ball
match at 6.00 p.m.
A cultural show that will begin at 7.30 p.m. will
lead to a music show in which professional artistes will perform,
paving the way to a disco that will continue until late in the night.
At Au Cap, a quiz that will begin at 6.00 p.m. on
Saturday August 16 will be followed by a display of a muscle flexing
exercise and a cultural show, which will be followed by a disco.
Talking to Nation earlier, Youth Festival
Coordinator Valerie Jumeau said the pre-youth festival has been
organised to prepare the young people for the main event scheduled for
August 22 - 24.
"The festival will also be an opportunity for the
youths in various districts to get the habit of organising activities
at district or regional level," she said.
"Members of the public will get the chance to
give their views and impressions on the Seychellois youths through a
“mikro pas partou” to be conducted by youths from the central region.
The "mikro pas partou" will take place in Victoria.
"Since many Seychellois youths always remain in
the background when such activities are organised, the pre-youth
festival will help them to come forward and show what they can do,"
she said.
She also noted that it is because of a lack of
participation in the recent pre-youth festival on Praslin that the
organising committee has decided to let the youths, with the help of
youth workers, decide on the kind of activities they want for the
forthcoming pre-youth festival on Mahe.
