Conference and World
Fishing Exhibition held in Vigo,
Spain by the
Minister for Agriculture and Marine Resources William Herminie, who was
accompanied by technical adviser for the Seychelles Fishing Authority
Philippe Michaud.
The conference,
which brought together ministers from the continents of Europe, Africa,
Asia and Australasia, discussed the concerns arising from
over-exploitation and other pertinent issues relating to the trade and
development of the fisheries industry.
According to a press
release from the ministry, this is because all the countries who
participated at the conference are all fishing nations with a common
agenda and they are all dependent on this activity for the prosperity
and well-being of their nations.
In the specific case
of Seychelles, the press release notes, the fishing industry not only
feeds the country's population but is also a major earner of foreign
exchange for its economy.
Since 1985, the
Conference of Ministers has been held at the same time as the World
Fishing Exhibition, and the Conference has always been a critical arena
where international strategies are debated and explored by ministers in
an effort to achieve a rational exploitation of fishing resources in the
world. |
