Reform Programme to the NationalAssembly before
members of the team involved in its preparation gave a very detailed
powerpoint presentation, Vice-President Michel said these qualities were
what had enabled Seychelles to be a successful nation since
independence.
He said that with this new programme there was now
hard work to be done by people both in and outside government, but he
was confident that success would be achieved.
"Let us use our 27th Independence Day anniversary
on Sunday (June 29) to reflect on all that we have achieved as a small
nation, with pride and dignity, over this short period of time,"
Vice-President Michel said.
"It is in this same spirit that I am asking the
people of Seychelles to continue to work with determination and pride
to build a better Seychelles for all Seychellois."
Vice-President Michel said it was investment in the
people over the past 25 years that had brought the country to its
current level of development and a readjustment of the economy was now
needed to prepare for further success.
He said investment in the socio-economic
development of the people had brought much success – a very low infant
mortality rate, high literacy rate, education for all, a health system
of very high standard and a very good housing programme – but had also
cost a lot.
He said this was the reason for the current
economic difficulty and the people understood and appreciated all the
development was for them.
"They see where the money has gone and they
understand very well why we now need the reform programme to shape up
the economy," Vice-President Michel said.
He added that the population understood that the
reform would bring them much more progress and that was why the
programme had been well appreciated since it was launched during the
Extraordinary Congress of the Seychelles People's Progressive Front (SPPF)
last Saturday June 21 .
It is to be noted that the programme has been
realised after extensive consultations with all sections of the
community, including businesses and politicians.
