An official with
the local Red Cross organisation is facilitating a disaster and response
training session in Uganda.
Roy Nibourette, vice-president for the Red Cross Society of Seychelles,
is currently in
Uganda
to help conduct the training session, which started on Monday
September 1
and will conclude on
September 8.
According to Hugue Albert, the society’s information officer, the
session is similar to the seven-day training camp that took place at Cap
Ternay earlier this month.
Mr
Nibourette, who was trained by the International Federation of the Red
Cross as a regional relief delegate, has also assisted with similar
training sessions in Kenya and Ethiopia.
“The Red Cross Society is proud to see its members highly involved at
the regional level,” said Colette Servina, president of the local Red
Cross society. “At present the national society has about 10 trained
regional disaster delegates and they are ready to be deployed for
disaster relief.”
In
the coming months, Ms Servina said, the society will work with the
government and other organisations to train more people at district
levels in disaster preparedness and response.
Mr
Albert said that both the local training camp and its Ugandan
counterpart were in line with “Strategy 2010,” the new plan adopted by
the International Federation of the Red Cross during its general
assembly. The strategy is designed to empower its volunteers and
partners to better participate in disaster control and response
activities. |
