Seychellois
representing a wide range of disciplines and endeavours politics,
religion, the media and academia will gather in Seychelles on Friday
September 12, for a regional peace seminar.
Sponsored by the
Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace (IIFWP), the
seminar, which will be conducted by officials of the IIFWP from its
headquarters in Nairobi, is dedicated to the theme The World at a
Turning Point: Considering Innovative Approaches to Peace Through
Responsible Leadership and Good Governance.
The seminar, to be
held at the International Conference Centre, will explore such topics as
principles for peace, interreligious imperative, a vision of good
governance, education and the role of the media, and human development.
"This programme is
in keeping with the IIFWP's mission of identifying the critical issues
facing our world, assessing current efforts aimed at providing
solutions, and offering alternative, innovative approaches to the search
for solutions," the seminar's organisers have said.
It is to be noted
that similar regional IIFWP seminars are taking place in 190 nations
this month. These seminars address the topics of global governance "and
the need for interreligious cooperation" as the basis for solving
critical global problems.
With IIFWP's full
support a resolution has been prepared by the Republic of the
Phillipines, along with other co-sponsoring nations, for presentation to
the 58th Session of the General Assembly. This resolution proposes the
establishment of a Special Committee of the General Assembly to develop
a full proposal and plan for this interreligious council as an organ of
the United Nations.
Coincidentally the
IIFWP is establishing an interreligious and international peace council
(IIPC) to be based in New York City.
Former President
James R. Mancham has accepted an invitation from the chairman and
secretary general of IIFWP-International to attend the inaugural meeting
of the IIPC which will take place in New York City from October 1 - 4,
2003 and which will be attended by distinguished world leaders
representing a wide range of fields, including religion, politics,
education and civil society. |
