A
bright green giant "peacock" and a cream coloured dummy horse
joined 20 dancers Sunday 19th who enlivened the already
spectacular Hindu religious Kavadi procession.
Dressed
in white and sporting a bright red spot painted on his forehead, Hindu
devotee, Siva Supramaniam, told Nation
that the dancers had come from India, and were an addition to the
normal exciting team who normally thrill and amaze both foreigners and
locals.
"We
are aware it has become a national tourist attraction," an Indian
national happily told the press, as the procession left Navasakthi
Vinayagar temple along Quincy Street.
The
faithfuls then followed a troop of dancers who performed flog dances
through Revolution Avenue, Harrison and Lodge streets before returning
to the temple where the various parties who took part in the ceremony
enjoyed lunch together with members of the public.
As usual, the Kavadi towing male devotees with
steel and silver skewers pierced through their cheeks, tongues arms and
backs were the centre of interest for most spectators.
