Hindus to celebrate festival of lights

The flagship event of the Hindu Council of Seychelles (HCOS), the Diwali Utsav (Festival of Lights), will be held on October 26 at the National Swimming Pool complex at Roche Caiman from 6:30 p.m.

This festive activity has assumed national proportions as it has over the years grown in popularity and last year saw and audience of over 4000 people comprising Indians, Seychellois and tourists.

This year the management committee has improved the product to give what has been described as "an unforgettable evening" to commemorate Diwali, which is celebrated in many countries all over the world.

On Diwali day itself, October 25, there will be a tree planting ceremony in the morning at the HCOS crematorium site at Providence led by dignitaries, community leaders and Hindu elders.

This will be followed by the opening of the Diwali mela (bazaar), organised by the Seychelles Industrial Development Corporation (SIDEC) at the swimming pool complex from 11 a.m.

This bazaar, which will have local souvenirs and gifts for sale as well as an Indian food stall, will be open until 8 p.m. on that day and open the whole day the following day (October 26) until the end of Diwali Utsav at 9 p.m.

Diwali Utsav on the 26th will see a colourful religious cultural programme by children, sparkler animation by children, spectacular fireworks display and free sweet boxes for families.

This Diwali Utsav will be marked by the release of a Diwali silver coin by a dignitary and will witness the commencement of a directory of Hindus in the Seychelles.

Prizes will also be distributed for the Diwali quiz published in the Nation newspaper.

“Our Diwali Utsav remains the crowning event of the Hindu Council,” said Mr Amitesh Banerjee, Chairman of the HCOS  “On behalf of the Hindu Council of Seychelles I extend our cordial invitation to the members of the public to attend this mega event. Entry is free and is open to all,” he said.

Mr Amitesh also conveyed best wishes for Diwali for the members of the Hindu Council and everyone in the Seychelles.

“May this auspicious festival of lights bring happiness and prosperity to every home in the Seychelles,” he said.
