Members of 12 Wildlife Clubs from different schools
hosted a variety show on the premises of Codevar in Victoria on Saturday
November 22, in a bid to further sensitise members of the public about
conservation.
The main theme for the activity, which was well
attended by members of the public, was invasive plants. Focus was also
given to the need for conservation of endemic species.
Top awards for clubs which had been more active
during the year were also given out and both Black Parrot of Bel Eau
(Main) School and Teng Teng of Pointe Larue School clinched the best
prizes in the primary category, while the Colibri club of Plaisance
school won the best award in the secondary category.
Six wildlife clubs which had presented their
projects for funding under the organisation’s Local Environment Action
Programme (LEAP), were presented with cheques of R1,000 and R2,000.
R2,000 is normally given to assist the clubs in setting up specific
projects and R1,000 for those going on field trips.
LEAP receives its funding from parent organisation,
Nature Seychelles, and aims at providing support to the Wildlife Clubs
that are action-oriented and work at community level. It also assists
with funding for trips to protected areas such as nature reserves.
Among those which had received the R2,000-cheques
are club Flamboyant of Mont Fleuri primary school and Colibri club of
Plaisance Secondary school which are planning to start a medicinal plant
garden in their school compounds and the Spice Club of Anse Royale
primary, with a project to begin their own wildlife garden at school.
R1,000-cheques were presented to the Teng Teng club
of Bel Eau, Casuarina of Plaisance and Bayan Star of Anse Etoile primary
schools of for field trips to La Digue, Curieuse and Silhouette
respectively.

of other clubs like Glacis Coco, Special Enviro, Kestrel, Mangrove and
NIE, members of the public appreciated presentations like dances,
sketches, poems, and songs performed by mainly young children about
birds, whales, sea turtles among others.
