As part of a
continuous series of workshops organised by the Ministry of Local
Government, Sports and Culture, non-governmental organisations and
government ministries recently had the chance to participate in
discussions about community programmes.
Held at the
International Conference Centre last week, the well-attended workshop
discussed the ideas put forward in previous seminars, whereby government
ministries for education, youth and health were joined by
non-governmental organisations, such as the Care Association and the
Association of Fathers Promoting Responsible Parenthood (AFPRP), to
merge their ideas on how to better adjust certain programmes and
increase emancipation of members of the community.
The series of
workshops, which started in early September and continued throughout the
month, gave district administrators and members of district programmes
the opportunity to explore new proposals and ideas for further
development of community programmes.
Mr Vincent Meriton,
the principal secretary for local government, welcomed the
representatives in his opening address and thanked them for making a
special effort to attend the workshop.
As part of the
agenda, the participants received background information on community
development and community life programme status at district and
secretarial level.
Programme and
development director for the ministry, Olsen Vidot facilitated the
seminar and during his intervention, Mr Olsen stressed the aspect of
working together as a team.
“The ministry of
local government, sports and culture, being the ministry that works
directly for the community by working with government ministries and
other organisations, thinks a lot more can be done to ensure the
infrastructures and programmes set up are used effectively,” Mr Olsen
added.
A final regroupment
of local government officials has been set for October 21, to discuss
the final formulation of an action plan for the suggestions put forward
during the workshops.
