Question Time in National Assembly
Roads to be widened for greater safety

Roads in certain parts of Mahe will be widened to make them safer for users.

Tourism and Transport minister Simone de Comarmond refered to roads at  Bougainville, Val d'Endorre and Copolia when making this announcement during Tuesday June 10 Question Time in the National Assembly.

Minister de Comarmond was answering questions put forward by the Anse Royale and Plaisance MNAs, Mr Barry Faure and Mrs Ivy Edmond respectively, concerning the widening of roads in their districts.

The minister said that plans to widen the roads in these areas were still being prepared.

She said that before carrying out work on any road the Land Transport Division (LTD) had to go through various procedures such as seeking for permission from private land owners on whose property the road passes.

Minister de Comarmond said that LTD had received R8 million over the past three years for the maintenance of 456 kilometres of roads on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue.

She added that the government would continue to invest in road maintenance in the coming years to ensure road safety.

The minister also said that since a lot of work had been done on various roads on Praslin over the last four years LTD had no immediate plans to resurface all roads there, but only certain parts that have been badly damaged.

These include the sections running from La Réserve to Anse Possession, from Ros Kare to the UCPS quarry at Amitié, behind Praslin Beach Hotel, from Anse Boudin to the Rivière Anglaise's bridge and from La Pointe to Anse Bois de Rose.

She said other works would be assessed on a case by case basis.

Minister de Comarmond also said that the delay in work to build a road at Salasie was due to the fact that it would now be diverted on account of housing construction in the area.
