The three hotels on Praslin participating in the
National Beach Monitoring Programme partnership with the Ministry of
Environment has recently started their monitoring exercises.
Assisted by officials from the Ministry of
Environment’s Coastal Zone Management Unit and from the ministry’s head
office on Praslin, the hotel employees who took part in the training
workshop set up their beach monitoring sites by taking their first beach
profile measurements.
The hotels namely Lemuria Resort, Marechiaro and
the Berjaya Praslin Beach will now be responsible to carry out the same
exercise every 2-3 months, while the Ministry of Environment will, in
the meantime, be in regular contact with the employees responsible to
get updates on the state of the beaches.
Lemuria Resort will be taking four profile
measurements, two on the Grand Anse Kerlan beach, one on Petit Anse
Kerlan and one at Anse Georgette. As for Marechiaro the staff will
taking a profile measurement on Grand Anse beach at St. Joseph and
finally Berjaya Praslin will be taking one profile measurement at Anse
Volbert.
Other beaches on Praslin such as Anse Lazio where
three profile measurements are being taken will be covered by the
Ministry of Environment’s office on Praslin.
As the programme is primarily a partnership with
the hotel industry, the Ministry of Environment is still welcoming other
hotels in Seychelles to join the programme so that they can contribute
towards the coverage of as many beaches as possible in Seychelles. The
contact persons for more details on the programme are Mr Alain De
Comarmond and Mr Rodney Quatre of the Ministry of Environment.
