Exhibition at Sans Soucis marks National Park Day

The National Parks Day on January 31 is the first environmental theme day to be celebrated at the beginning of every year. To commemorate this event the Forestry and National Park Section in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources organised an interactive exhibition at the Mission Lodge, Sans  Soucis.

The section found it more convenient to mark this occasion by holding a programme of activities under the theme “National Parks & Forestry Section at work” on Friday 30, in view that January 31 fell on a Saturday.

The opening of the exhibition at 10 a.m. started the activities. The director of National Park and Forestry Section Michel Vielle welcomed the officials of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, invitees and Eco club students in certain schools.

The objective of such an interactive exhibition was to not only display materials but to enable those present to have a broader view through explanations of the responsibilities of the five major units within the Forestry and National Parks Section.

“People also had the chance to learn more on what is being done to protect our forests from disasters such as fires, plant diseases, alien plants’ introduction/ invasion and various laws pertaining to the forest’ protection,” said Mr Vielle.

During the exhibition the officials of the section also displayed various pieces of equipment they use in their everyday work namely how to measure the age of a tree and work being done on the various national reserves trails.

Apart from the main activity being the exhibition other environmental education activities such as educational quiz competitions and a small exercise to identify numerous invasive plants in the surroundings, targeted mainly the schoolchildren, before the event concluded in the afternoon.
