Nine members from
the Gold Award Holders Association (Gaha) of the President's Awards
Scheme have met Prince Edward, the earl of Wessex and son of Prince
Philip, the patron of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
The nine
Seychellois, including Bernadette Sifflore, who is the coordinator of
Presidents Awards for Seychelles, and Gaha chairperson Salma Quatre, met
Prince Edward in Mauritius while on a 11-day working visit.
Prince Edward had
been invited by the Award Secretariat of Mauritius to present
certificates to 19 young Mauritians who had completed their gold award
programme.
While in
Mauritius, the Seychellois attended a week-long course on award
leadership skills which they hope would enhance their skills in the
running of their own association.
They also shared
their experience about how to run associations, the roles of a committee
and award leaders, the needs of the youths and how the scheme can meet
those needs.
"We also had the
opportunity to put what we have learned into practice by helping a group
of young Mauritians who were in the final stage of completing their
bronze award. We were responsible to give them training about map
reading and marking check points during expedition,” Miss Quatre said.
The participants
added they learned a lot through this trip and hoped that in future
similar exchanges could be organised.
