In collaboration with the National Arts Council,
the Indian High Commission has organised a painting competition for
children under the theme "What children can do for the society."
The competition took place across two categories:
5- to 8 year-olds in a junior category and 8 years-olds and up as the
senior category.
Held at the Indian High Commission Friday November
14, the event commemorated the birthday of India’s first and
longest-serving Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Born in November
1889, the prime minister was known for his love of children, which is
why the day is observed in India as Children’s Day.
According to Indian High Commissioner Malay Mishra,
it was imperative for Seychelles to organise an activity for its
children.
Together with the National Arts Council, which is
concerned with the promotion of art and culture in Seychelles, children
from different schools on Mahe were regrouped with the help of art
teachers.
“This competition is aimed at helping young
children to develop their sense of creativity and enhance the use of
their imagination, ” said Commisioner Mishra.
For the competition, young artists had to draw for
90 minutes and a panel of artists from the National Arts Council will
judge the work.
Three winners in each category will be selected and
prizes will be given on January 26, 2004 in an exhibition at the
National Arts Council to mark India’s National Day.
