Strong economy
The country has during the past five
years been able to control the rate of inflation and enjoyed
deflation in 1995 when the consumer
price index fell by 1.28%, after the
Government took measures to lower the cost of basic
commodities and services and to reduce incidence of taxation.
Seychelles has been listed in the 1998 edition of the Guinness
Book of Records as the country with the lowest inflation.
For the past 10 years the country enjoyed an economic growth
of 4-6%. The stable currency, the Seychelles rupee, is
maintained by the country ‘s monetary policy. From 1979
until May 1996 the rupee was pegged to the Special Drawing
Rights (SDR). During that time it served the rupee well by
protecting it against the adverse effects of external shocks
hence inhibiting excessive fluctuation. But the SDR basket was
gradually transformed whilst the trade and tourism patterns of
Seychelles were also undergoing remarkable changes. The result
was the excessive appreciation of the rupee. In May 1996 the
Central Bank discontinued the rupee’s link to the SDR. The
rupee is now pegged to a trade and tourism partners of
Seychelles, UK, France, Singapore, South Africa, Germany,
Italy, Japan and USA.
