LAST Saturday's
Clean and jerk Grand Prix, held at the Roche Caïman Omnisports Gym, was
not the best of competitions the Seychelles Weightlifting Association (SWA)
had organised because for once no national records fell.
Compared to past
competitions when weightlifters broke a number of national records,
Saturday's Clean and jerk Grand Prix, with R1,500 on offer for both the
best male and female lifters and R500 for each record broken, was not of
the level expected of it.
Policewoman Janet Thélermont,
winner of the gold medal in the snatch event of the 69-kg category of
the African Championship in Durban, South Africa, earlier this year,
called it a day after failing her first two attempts at 115kg.
In the men's 69-kg
division, Charles Siméon's best performance was 130kg in his first try
before failing both his second and third attempts at 140kg.
Peter Havelock, who
was competing in the 77-kg category, finished with a best lift of 130kg.
After failing his first try at 125kg, Havelock heaved the same weight
over his head in his second attempt before adding another 5 kilos to the
bar for a successful third try at 130kg.
Both Robert Kilindo
and Frank Accouche, the other two lifters in the competition, did not
manage any lift.
Kilindo, competing
in the 85-kg division, failed all three of his tries at 145kg, while
Accouche could not get the bar, loaded at 170.5kg, over his head in his
first two attempts. In his third try, he asked for 172kg, which he again
failed to lift.
Besides the senior
lifters, four young female aspiring weightlifters were making their
debut.
Ruby Malvina,
competing in the 48-kg category, finished as the best of the lot with a
total of 95kg after snatching 40kg and achieving 55kg in the clean and
jerk.
Jessy Anacoura was
second to Malvina in the 48-kg division after lifting 40kg in the snatch
event and 45kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 85kg.
Third in that same
category was Clementina Agricole with 45kg in the clean and jerk after
failing all her three attempts at 35kg in the snatch event.
Lucianne Henriette,
the only competitor in the 69-kg category, finished with 70kg after
lifting 30kg in the snatch and 40kg in the clean and jerk.
