TRYERS confirmed themselves as the 2002 division
one champions of the Mohan Shopping Centre-sponsored league championship
after they comfortably won their last match 7-1 against Anse Aux Pins
last Saturday at the English River community centre.
Tryers, who boast two of the country's top players
in reigning best male domino player Paul Labiche and captain Marcel
Jacqueline, started the day in second position with 36 points, one less
than then leaders Cascade (37 points).
Promoted to the top flight at the start of this
season after winning the 2001 second division league championship,
Tryers needed just one point to claim the title for the first time.
Grand Anse Mahe-based Tryers, who eliminated Quincy
Village 3-2 in the Federation Cup semifinal to book their tickets for
the final against La Salette, finished top of the league with 39 points
after 12 victories in 20 matches.
Cascade settled for the runners-up spot and La
Salette finished third with 35 points.
Quincy Village, who have won nine of their 20
matches played for 32 points, finished fourth, Anse Boileau fifth with
30 points, Unity sixth with 28, Zig Zag seventh with 27, Anse Aux Pins
eighth with 26, Silhouette ninth with 25, Pointe Larue 10th with 22 and
Port Glaud 11th with 10.
Meanwhile, St Pierre dominated the bottom division
with 27 points from 14 games and they will automatically be promoted to
the first division next year.
Baie Lazare follow in second position with 23
points while RCS United, who have shown tremendous progress this season,
finished third with 21 points.
English River, who share the same number of points
(21) as the former but have an inferior capot
difference, are fourth while SBL Domino Team (18 points), APC Parish (16
points), Anse Boileau Ladies (16 points) and Conquerors (15 points)
finished in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth positions respectively.
