THE annual A. J.
Shah & Associates and Ernst & Young Golf Challenge played last
Saturday at the Seychelles Golf Club, Anse Aux Pins, found most of the
golfers being overwhelmed by the course. The afternoon's golf, as the
tournament's name suggests, turned out to be quite a challenge with only
one participant, 16-handicapper Edwin Palmer, being able to play to his
handicap.
He outclassed the
rest of the field to amass 36 Stableford points and have his name
engraved on the much-sought after trophy created by renowned sculptor
Tom Bowers.
In second position
was three-handicapper Charlie Morin with 34 points. He was the Club
house leader until the end and was widely expected to walk away with the
top spot. However, Palmer returned in the last group with his winning
total. In third position was Jerry Jean-Baptiste, playing off a
seven-handicap. He too had 34 points, but was beaten by Morin on 'countback'.
Pat Harding with 20
points, Eddie Micock and Jean-Baptiste with 18 points apiece were the
leaders at the end of the front-nine. The back-nine proved to be much
more gruelling with a majority of the golfers finding their game fade
away.
Maybe it was a
combination of the sweltering condition and the freshly mowed greens
that proved to be challenging.
Harding took the
best front-nine prize and Peter Moncherry, with 16 points, won the best
back-nine. Guybert Pragassen, last year's winner of the tournament,
snatched the bogey prize for 'Most Golf'.
The prize for the
longest drive on the seventh was won by Jean-Baptiste but the prize for
the closest to the pin on the 15th went begging as none of the golfers
could hit the green off their tee-shot.
Mr A. J. Shah,
senior partner of A. J. Shah & Associates, presented the prizes to
the winners. Mr Sunil Shah, partner and the former captain of the
Seychelles Golf Club, thanked the participants and on behalf of his
firm, Ernst & Young, pledged continued sponsorship for the year
ahead.
For his part, club
captain Dudu Chudasama thanked the sponsors for their continued support
to the club.
