THIS year's edition of the Vijay League started
over the weekend with two exciting matches at the Roche Caïman tennis
courts which went in favour of Tennis Club 2000 and Aces.
Last Friday, El Nino, captained by André Hissen,
edged Tennis Club 2000 whose captain is Charlie Ng.
After the four singles matches, both teams were
tied on two wins. El Nino's Anthony Brioche beat Antonio Sequenzia 2-0
(6-1 6-0) and Sharifa Joubert defeated fellow junior player Vanessa Low
Hon after a tie-break 2-1 (6-1 6-7 7-4).
Tennis Club 2000's wins in the singles came through
veteran André Derjacques who beat young Shane Pothin 2-0 (6-1 6-4) and
Philip Brioche who defeated El Nino's captain André Hissen 2-0 (6-4
6-2).
Tennis Club 2000 made sure of victory by claiming
the two doubles matches. The men's doubles pair of Philip Brioche and
Antonio Sequenzia beat the duo of Hissen and Pothin 2-0 (6-4 7-5), while
the mixed doubles team of Derjacques and Anna Denousse prevailed 2-0
(7-5 7-5) over Anthony Brioche and Sharifa Joubert.
On Saturday, Aces, captained by Seychelles Tennis
Association chairman Carlo Lauro, won 4-2 against The Blues in a
much-contested match.
Like the day before, the two teams were even after
the four singles games. For The Blues, Marco Rigamonti beat Selwyn
Lespoir 2-0 (6-3 6-0) and captain Carlo Lauro beat out-of-form Colin
Bastienne 2-0 (6-1 6-1).
For Aces, evergreen Selwyn Knowles defeated Dino
Rigamonti 2-0 (6-2 6-0) and Fatim Kanté walked over Jennifer Bonne who
arrived late for her match.
Aces then won both doubles matches after
tie-breaks. Selwyn Lespoir and Selwyn Knowles beat Gianni Torsi and
Marco Rigamonti 2-1 (6-3 3-6 7-3) in the men's doubles, while John Adam
and Fatim Kanté edged Carlo Lauro and Jennifer Bonne 2-1 (6-2 5-7 7-5)
in the mixed doubles. |
