Tennis: Vijay League
Victory for Tennis Club 2000 and Aces

THIS year's edition of the Vijay League started over the weekend with two exciting matches at the Roche Caïman tennis courts which went in favour of Tennis Club 2000 and Aces.

Last Friday, El Nino, captained by André Hissen, edged Tennis Club 2000 whose captain is Charlie Ng.

After the four singles matches, both teams were tied on two wins. El Nino's Anthony Brioche beat Antonio Sequenzia 2-0 (6-1 6-0) and Sharifa Joubert defeated fellow junior player Vanessa Low Hon after a tie-break 2-1 (6-1 6-7 7-4).

Tennis Club 2000's wins in the singles came through veteran André Derjacques who beat young Shane Pothin 2-0 (6-1 6-4) and Philip Brioche who defeated El Nino's captain  André Hissen 2-0 (6-4 6-2).

Tennis Club 2000 made sure of victory by claiming the two doubles matches. The men's doubles pair of Philip Brioche and Antonio Sequenzia beat the duo of Hissen and Pothin 2-0 (6-4 7-5), while the mixed doubles team of Derjacques and Anna Denousse prevailed 2-0 (7-5 7-5) over Anthony Brioche and Sharifa Joubert.

On Saturday, Aces, captained by Seychelles Tennis Association chairman Carlo Lauro, won 4-2 against The Blues in a much-contested match.

Like the day before, the two teams were even after the four singles games. For The Blues, Marco Rigamonti beat Selwyn Lespoir 2-0 (6-3 6-0) and captain Carlo Lauro beat out-of-form Colin Bastienne 2-0 (6-1 6-1).

For Aces, evergreen Selwyn Knowles defeated Dino Rigamonti 2-0 (6-2 6-0) and Fatim Kanté walked over Jennifer Bonne who arrived late for her match.

Aces then won both doubles matches after tie-breaks. Selwyn Lespoir and Selwyn Knowles beat Gianni Torsi and Marco Rigamonti 2-1 (6-3 3-6 7-3) in the men's doubles, while John Adam and Fatim Kanté edged Carlo Lauro and Jennifer Bonne 2-1 (6-2 5-7 7-5) in the mixed doubles.
