SEYCHELLOIS
female weightlifter Janet Thélermont, who was competing in the 69kg
category, beat the African clean and jerk record of 117kg with a lift of
120kg in her third attempt in last Saturday's Association Cup
competition held at Victoria Gymnasium.
The
lift is a new Seychelles record but it cannot be recognised as an
African record because there was no International Weightlifting
Federation (IWF) or African Weightlifting Federation (AWF)
representative present at the venue.
The
policewoman, whose old best was 115kg, also recorded a snatch record of
97.5kg to add 2.5kg to her old best, which she set earlier this year.
A
snatch gold medallist at the African Championship which took place in
Cape Town, South Africa, in April, Thélermont told Sports Nation yesterday that she was a happy lady.
"I
celebrated my victory and I showed the Seychellois people that I am
serious in what I am doing. I am proud of my achievement even though I
encounter a lot of problems to get release from my work to train,"
said the 22-year-old who hopes to get a wild card for the 1st Afro-Asian
Games in India in November.
The
competition's four other records were broken by Charles Siméon, Steven
Baccus and Frank Accouche.
Siméon
added .5kg to the snatch national standard of 100kg in the 69kg division
and beat Roy Buisson's old 115kg best by heaving 135kg over his head.
Accouche,
who was competing in the 105+kg, snatched 130kg to improve his own
record of 127.5kg, while Baccus clean and jerked 180kg to add 2.5kg to
his old best of 177.5kg in the 105kg division.
