SEYCHELLES'
representative at the recent Fifth Pan-African Scrabble Championship
which took place in Nairobi, Kenya, W. T. D. Silva, won rounds of
applause when he won eight of his 18 matches played.
Silva, a teacher at
the Belonie Secondary School, was neck-and-neck in the scores of the
other 10 matches he conceded.
Silva, who along
with Johnson Fasuba, an engineer employed by the Ministry of Local
Government, Sports and Culture (MLGSC), defended Seychelles' colours in
the World Scrabble Competition in Melbourne, Australia, two years ago,
won his matches against players from Nigeria (Motolanie), Kenya (Eric
Kusimba), Uganda (Dr Allan Mpairwe) and Tanzania (Dr Mushtak, Murtaza,
Makbool, Makbul Manji and Hamisi Quezi).
Invited to take part
in the Fifth Pan-African Scrabble Championship by the Kenya Amateur
Scrabble Association, Silva was honoured when he was made to distribute
the awards.
South African Trevor
Holmiere won the U. S. $1,000 cash prize and the Pan-African Scrabble
Championship Cup after defeating the much fancied Segun of Nigeria in
the final.
